2022 NE GSA Meeting

ES-SEPM continues to sponsor receptions with keynote speakers and technical sessions at regional GSA Meetings.

NE GSA Meeting, 20-22 March 2022, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Our ES-SEPM event is on Sunday, March 20, 6-8 p.m. ET, at Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square in Commonwealth Salon 3. This is a non-ticketed event and the reception will immediately precede the keynote address.

The keynote speaker is SEPM President-Elect Liz Hajek (Associate Professor, Department of Geosciences, The Pennsylvania State University). The title and short description of her lecture are:

"Sharing and mining sedimentary geology field data: new technology and new opportunities"

Sedimentary geology observations from outcrops and cores are detailed and varied, but can be difficult to store, share, and query electronically. New approaches to data collection, including the Strabo Spot field-data collection app, and uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-acquired digital outcrop models, have opened new possibilities for data collection and data sharing in sedimentary geology, stratigraphy, and paleontology. As a field, leveraging these new opportunities to employ collaborative, data-science approaches can help us answer new questions about Earth history and subsurface prediction. This presentation will review some community-based efforts to build shared, open-access datasets and invite discussion about how we can collectively grow our engagement with digital field data in sedimentary geology.

Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.
